Would you like to help foster a life-long love of reading for some of Juneau’s youngest children? Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was founded on the vision of providing all enrolled children, from the day they are born, a free, brand new, age-appropriate book every month in the mail, until their fifth birthday. AEYC-SEA is the local coordinator for this program in Juneau, and will provide registration service to enroll local children.
Research shows, and many educators agree, that a child’s capacity to learn is developed very early in life. Literacy skills such as letters, names and shapes, associating sounds with letters, being read to, familiarity with books, associating reading with love and fun are developed long before a child is able to read. One of the most powerful advocates for encouraging adults to read with children is a child that just got a new book in the mail with their name on it, and you can help make that happen.
We are looking for sponsors to help us “get the train rolling” for the Imagination Library. For only $30, you can sponsor a year of free books for one child. If you sponsor a year of books for 20 children, we will put you or your organization’s name on one of our promotional train cars, which will appear at events all over Juneau. Local sponsors to date include:
Communities In Schools of Juneau, KTOO, Association of Alaska School Boards, Alaska Initiative for Community Engagement, Bartlett Regional Hospital, Cathy and Ed Thomas, Peter Froehlich and Elsa Demeksa, Kathy and Doug Blanc, Joy and Rich Lyon, and the Association for the Education of Young Children (AEYC).
Participating supporters include: Juneau Public Library, United Way of Southeast Alaska, and Juneau U.S. Post Office employees.
